Automatic Installation on the current machine

If you are currently viewing from a Silicon Graphics host, to automatically perform a complete installation on your current host, simply click on the Artstream icon, or on the appropriate "tardist" link below.

Manual installation on a different machine

For a manual installation on a different machine than the download destination, proceed through the following steps:
  1. With the cursor over the appropriate "tardist" link, select the "Save Link As..." option from your browser, and save to your selected location.
  2. Create a new directory (folder) on the destination Silicon Graphics machine, then move the "tardist" archive the new directory. (The location of the folder is not significant as the installation places all files in specific locations).
  3. From a Unix shell, attach to the folder containing the archive, "cd /mypath/myfolder", then unpack the archive with the command "tar xvf artstream.tardist".
  4. Open the Software Manager from the System ToolChest, and drag the new folder into the Software Manager drop pocket. Press the Lookup button after the folder has been dropped. Root privileges are needed for installation.

Installation Prerequisites

If not already a member, a free membership to Silicon Surf may be needed to obtain some or all of these prerequisite systems.

  • Complete distribution.
  • Only Irix 6.5 is supported. Older releases running on previous O.S.'s are available by request. Current patch sets, and specific N32 libraries are required for O.S. version prior to 6.5.
  • Wacom driver for Wacom tablet use.
Complete distribution: Verify that your local byte count exactly matches that listed above for the selected distribution. For those not familiar with the Unix shell, file size information can be obtained from the directory view by selecting the file using the 1st mouse button, then pressing the 3rd mouse button and releasing on the "Get Info" menu item.
Irix 6.5: The newest version of Irix is available at no cost to SGI customers with current support contracts via the TAC line at 1-800-800-4744(4SGI). On systems without support, the O.S. upgrade can be purchased from SGI telesales in the U.S. at 1-800-800-7441 at a price of $600.00 U.S. for the Advanced Workstation Environment version. Other countries can purchase Irix 6.5 from the telesales office indicated in the SGI global sites list.

Wacom driver: For those wishing to use a stylus and tablet, Artstream provides full support for the features on Wacom ArtPad II, ArtZ and Intuos tablets. Current SGI drivers for these products can be obtained from the Wacom Web site: http://www.wacom.com/productsupport/driver.html.

Those not running an Irix 6.5.x version will need to be concerned with the following prerequsites, or will need to install Irix 6.5.x.

Current patch set: Numerous patches have been released for the 6.3 and 6.4 versions of Irix. In most cases only small parts of the entire patch set are required for Artstream, however it is easiest to avoid confusion by simply installing the entire patch set if possible. Since these patch sets are 200+ MB, they should be obtained on CD, and are available even without support contracts from the SGI TAC line at 1-800-800-4744(4SGI) in the USA, or the Technical Assistance Center of each country indicated in the SGI global sites list. If, for some reason, it is difficult to obtain these patches, contact support@mediascape.com for information on smaller incremental changes that may be needed for your specific system.
