Artstream-2.0b12-3, released 06/30/00

Irix and Linux version

Linux Installation prerequisites:

Artstream-Linux relies on the following external libraries resident on the host system, along with the Mediascape supplied distribution:

From the Red Hat 6.x (or other Linux 2.2.x) distribution (currently only verified on RH6.x):

  1. glibc 2.1:
  2. EGCS 1.1 C++ Runtimes:
  3. svgalib 1.3.1:
  4. XFree86 3.3.5 or later:

From http://www.mesa3d.org, or ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/contrib/libc6/i386/:

  1. Mesa 3.2:

From http://www.mediascape.com/linuxrpm.html:

  1. Artstream-2.0b12-1.i386.rpm

Both the XFree86 and Mesa3D libraries are the free distributions of these libraries. Commercial versions are also available and may be substituted.

License installation:

To install the Artstream Linux license, perform the following:

  1. /usr/flexlm/Mediascape/lmhostid
  2. Fill out the form at http://www.mediascape.com/linuxreg.html, including the lmhostid displayed by the above utility.
  3. Save the license section of the reply email in /usr/flexlm/licenses/artstream.lic

To install the Artstream-Irix license, with root privileges, perform the following:

  1. From the Irix ToolChest launch System->License Manager.
  2. Select the Install option.
  3. Select the FLEXlm Nodelock License option.
  4. Copy the the license in the reply email into the appropriate fields of the License Manager.

Try out the sample docs in /usr/share/Artstream/docs for starters.

Note: As of version 2.0b6-4 the installation directory for Linux has moved from /usr/local to /usr. Existing licenses may need to be moved from /usr/local/flexlm to /usr/flexlm.

Known bugs Mesa libGLU:

The Mesa libGLU is currently overridden by an SGI supplied distribution that provides superior stability. Improved Mesa libGLU versions may be used in the future, but for now, a private libGLU is included in the Artstream distribution. This does not overwrite any Mesa supplied libraries and can coexist in case the Mesa libGLU is required on your system.

Know bugs 3rd party OpenGL libraries:

MetroLink libGL.

  1. Although it seems free of crashes, we have yet to get correct results from Artstream running with MetroGL. Alternate triangles seem to get dropped in our tests.

Known bugs X Servers:

XFree86 3.3.6:

  1. The X server seems to spontaneously stop sending Ctl and Alt button events. This prevents access to all tools and accelerators that rely on them.

XFree86 4.0:

The an integrated OpenGL component of the 4.0 X server crashes when encountering a visual on our Paint palette. Instructions for using XFree86 4.0 without the integrated OpenGL acceleration, (using Mesa instead) are provided on our Linux download page at http://www.mediascape.com/linuxrpm.html#xserver.

MetroLink X

  1. Under certain circumstance Metro X locks up and needs to be restarted. We are still trying to determine if this is due to any installation problem on our part.

Known bugs Artstream:
  1. Unaccelerated performance is currently very slow.
  2. Undo is currently not available.
  3. Artstream preferences currently do not allow selection of helper applications for raster image manipulation, and is currently hard coded to use gimp.
  4. Most Linux desktops grab the Alt-Mouse1 gesture, and prevent its use as a curve modifier, and click behind function in Artstream.
  5. Artstream currently only supports Type1 fonts.
  6. The installation does not always perform the font database initialization required to run the application. When this initialization has not occurred, a dialog box is posted describing the problem and the remedy.
  7. Artstream does not recognize newly installed fonts until /usr/lib/Artstream/gendb is run.
  8. The Object Manager palette never updates the document title, causing all documents to remain named "Untitled-1".
  9. Reflowed text blocks do not always update properly. A forced redraw may be needed.
  10. A story cannot be assigned to a shape containing VectorPaint, an image, or 3D model. These attributes can only be applied after the story.
  11. Certain palette options are currently unimplemented: Paint: Shadow color and properties and text stroke color. Text:Spell Check, H&J attributes, auto-hyphen attributes, character styles, tab styles.
  12. PostScript import is currently unavailable.
  13. PostScript output is only partially implemented.
  14. Text blocks sometimes retain their selections when the insertion point is moved to another block. Place the insertion point in the block in question to fix (select the block without a text selection).
  15. JPEG and GIF images do not display properly.
  16. There is a harmless, intermittent Motif warning on the vertical scroll bar.
  17. Deselection of current selections, either by selection of a new shape, or selection of nothing, may appear to not function if the SHIFT key gets out of phase. This can happen if the key is pressed while the cursor is over the canvas, then released while off the canvas. Until this is prevented, it can be resynced by simply pressing and releasing the SHIFT key while over the canvas.
  18. Some highlight scarring remains after dragging selected shapes with vertical or horizontal outlines or anchor handles. This can be relieved by refreshing the canvas with either a pan or zoom.
  19. The new vertices created by the scissor tool are not visible immediately after creation as the node markers are currently immediately erased.
  20. The text color on the Object Manager palette is white instead of black on some installations, making text invisible when an entry is selected. (Let us know if you encounter this so we can better isolate the circumstance that causes it).
  21. Modification of coordinates for two point lines in the Coordinate Editor Dialog corrupts the coordinate values.
