NOTE: Due to demands of other projects, Mediascape has temporarily suspended development of Artstream-Linux. Consequently, these distributions may no longer be compatible with later Linux kernels. Please feel free to register, and we will send email notification when an update is available. In the meantime you may find Sketch a useful alternative for illustration on Linux.

Installation Prerequisites:
Identify
existing OpenGL driver
The Artstream rpm provided here requires OpenGL
library drivers to be resident on the users system. To determine if an OpenGL
driver already exists on your system, use the following commands locate
libGL.so.1 and locate libGLU.so.1. If
no paths are returned, then an OpenGL driver needs to be installed. This driver
can be obtained from several sources, including the free Mesa distribution described
below, and other commercial sources.
Using
the free Mesa drivers
Any graphics card is supported without acceleration
using the Mesa 3D Graphics Library,
a free OpenGL compatible library. The Mesa library is comprised of two components,
the libGL and libGLU. Currently, due to problems in the Mesa libGLU, Artstream
includes and uses a separate SGI distribution of libGLU which overrides, (but
does not overwrite), the Mesa version.
Therefore it is now only necessary to obtain the latest version of libGL from
Mesa, for which versions 3.1 or later seem to be stable. The
latest Mesa libGL distribution, (3.2 at this writing), can be obtained from the
Mesa download site.
Other
OpenGL drivers
Hardware acceleration for the Mesa driver is currently
provided by Nvidia,
and support is in progress for cards by other vendors. Licensed, SGI compliant
drivers are also available without and with hardware acceleration. Accelerated
OpenGL drivers are now
shipping from XiGraphics,
with a broad selection of supported
graphics cards. Additionally, Metro Link
currently provides a SGI compliant OpenGL driver without acceleration for a broad
range of supported
graphics cards, and has announced plans for accelerated support of some
graphics cards. Also, SGI, in conjunction
with VA Linux and Nvidia plan to release
accelerated OpenGL in the near future. A survey of current and planned accelerated
OpenGL implementations for Linux can be found at www.linux3d.org.
As of version 2.1a1-7 and later, Artstream now supports version 4.0.2 of the XFree86 XWindows system. This version of XFree86 is recommended, or a commercial X server from XiGraphics or MetroLink.
Enabling backing store
Artstream requires
backing store to be enabled on the X server. Instructions on how to enable
this feature for various server environments is summarized in our enabling
backing store page.
Artstream download and installation:
This distribution runs without a license in demo mode, allowing all features except save, export and print. A free 30 day license is available by registering at http://www.mediascape.com/linuxreg.html. On line documentation, (still in progress), can be viewed by registered users at http://www.mediascape.com/mediaEscape/guide.html. A full license purchase will soon be available at http://www.mediascape.com/orderform.html.
Compatibility note: Due to slightly different rates of change in the various major Linux distributions, we now provide a different release for each of the major distributions. Currently RedHat 6.2 and Mandrake 7.2 are verified. Due to some problems with an XFree86 4.0.2 library component, these versions are both only fully functional with commercial OpenGL drivers such as that from nVidia or other licensed hardware vendors.

For convenience, the following is a rpm of the last version of Mesa that we have tested with. This was compiled on Red Hat 6.2. For source code and other Mesa 3D related information see the Mesa 3D site.

As of the 2.1a1-7 distibution of Artstream, OpenInventor is now bundled. Our version of OpenInventor is installed in a local directory, only recognized by Artstream. Only the components needed for Artstream are included. For a full, and system wide version of OpenInventor, see ftp://oss.sgi.com/projects/inventor/download.
More details on this package an be found at http://oss.sgi.com/projects/inventor/.

A network interface card is required on your system to obtain an Artstream license. The host ID from this card is needed for license generation. After installation, to obtain the Artstream-Linux license, perform the following:
Try out the sample docs in /usr/share/Artstream/docs for starters. Note: As of version 2.0b11-4 the installation directory has moved from /usr/local to /usr. If a prior version artstream was installed, but not run in the old location, the old license will need to be moved from /usr/local/flexlm to /usr/flexlm. |
