9. Importing

Numerous file formats can be imported into an Artstream page. These formats include vector clipart, raster image, (scanned or rendered) data, and fully shaded 3D models. Also story body copy can be imported.

Supported File formats:

Vector
Native Artscript format, Postscript and EPS formats.

Raster
Raster formats include:

and more, with support of alpha channel where provided.

3D
Inventor 2.0+, and VRML 1.0 formats.

Files can be imported in either of two ways, by using the File->Import option, or by the drag & drop method.

File Import Dialog

Using the File Import dialog allows the option to scale imported data during the import process. When the Import option is selected, the file browser is launched, allowing the selection of any file in the current disk tree. Following the completion of the selection dialog, and after the selected file is read, the user is prompted by a corner shaped cursor, which allows an area to be dragged that defines the area to be occupied by the imported image. The dragged area is constrained to the aspect ratio of the imported image. If the cursor is clicked instead of dragged, the default position of the lower left corner, and the native size of the image are used.

Drag and Drop Import

Any of the icons pictured above can be dragged from where ever they occur in the desktop or directory view. They can be released on any page, and will be positioned centered over the cursor at the time of release, and at the native size of the image. Dragging is accomplished by simply pressing the 1st mouse button on the icon, then dragging, and releasing the icon at the desired position on the desired page.

All components of imported images are applied to the current layer, and automatically selected upon import.

9.1 Clipart

When native Artscript, or PostScript files are imported, all shapes in these images are added to the document, and become independently selectable. All imports are added after the current layer. Native Artscript files can result in the creation of new layers that may have been defined in the imported file.

Editing Clipart

After import, all vector clipart can be manipulated in the same way as elements created during the current session.

9.2 Images

The import of an image in any of the above formats results in the placement of a rectangle with a white fill color, a null stroke color, a texture with the path name of the imported image, and the fit mode set to Fit Sides. As this shape becomes selected, the paint palette is altered to reflect this state so, unless changed, all subsequent shapes will acquire these paint attributes.

Editing Images

A selected image can revised in a raster editor by double clicking on it, thereby launching a default, or a user specified raster editor. By default imgworks is launched. Alternately any editor that accepts the format of the selected image can be invoked, such as imgview, PhotoShop, Gimp, or Xv. The selected image is applied to the raster editor when it is invoked, and any changes that are made to the image and saved are applied back to all instances of that image. Where only the selected instance of the image needs to be changed, the changed image can be saved under a new name, and the selected instance of it updated to that new name.

9.3 3D Models

An imported model behaves much like an imported image in so far as it results in the placement of a rectangle with a white fill color, a null stroke color, a texture with the path name of the imported model, and the fit mode set to Fit Sides. Again, as this shape is automatically selected, the paint palette is altered to reflect this state which, unless changed, assigns these paint attributes to all subsequent shapes.

Editing 3D Models

A selected model can be revised in a 3D by double clicking on it, thereby launching the Artstream 3D editor. The 3D editor currently allows individual items, including lights, in a 3D scene to be selected and reoriented in 3D space. After concluding the edit, changes made during the 3D edit session are applied to only the selected instance of the 3D model.

9.4 Stories

Stories can be imported only if a current text cursor exists in the target page for the import. A text cursor exists either by clicking the text tool in an existing story block, or an unassigned block, which is assigned a new story by the application of the text tool. Text for a story can then be imported by selecting a plain ASCII file using the import or drag & drop command. The new text will be appended at the position following the existing text cursor.
