2. Installation

Installing the Software

Directly from the Web

When installation is performed directly off the Web, following a complete download, the Software Manager is automatically invoked. Root privileges are required to complete installation, so if not already at that status, you will be prompted for the root password to continue.

It is then only necessary to press the Start option, which proceeds with the default installations in the Software Manager.

From a File Transferred from Another Host

If Web access is not available to the host on which you would like to run Artstream, complete the download on the Web accessible host. To transfer the file to the Artstream host proceed through th following steps:

  1. Create a new folder, (directory), with the New Directory option using Directory View or mkdir using the Unix shell.
  2. Move the downloaded file to this new folder (directory). This command is dependent on the connection to the host with Web access. An NFS mount would allow use of the cp command, otherwise ftp can be used, or if necessary an external disk such as a Zip drive can be used.
  3. From a Unix shell, unpack this archive using the command tar xvf artNN.tardist.
  4. Open the Software Manager from the System ToolChest (show below for the License Manager), and drag the new folder into the Software Manager drop pocket. Press the Lookup button after the folder has been dropped. Root privileges will be necessary to continue.
  5. Press the start option to complete the default installation.

Installation conflicts

If the Start button is not highlighted in blue, as shown above, be sure to verify the following:

If the Conflicts button is highlighted in red be sure to verify the following installation pre-requisites, and supply any missing sub-systems.

Installation Prerequisites

If not already a member, a free membership to Silicon Surf may be needed to obtain some or all of these prerequisite systems.

Complete distribution: Verify that your local byte count exactly matches that listed above for the selected distribution. For those not familiar with the Unix shell, file size information can be obtained from the directory view by selecting the file using the 1st mouse button, then pressing the 3rd mouse button and releasing on the "Get Info" menu item.

Irix 6.5: The newest version of Irix is available at no cost to SGI customers with current support contracts via the TAC line at 1-800-800-4744(4SGI). On systems without support, the O.S. upgrade can be purchased from SGI telesales in the U.S. at 1-800-800-7441 at a price of $600.00 U.S. for the Advanced Workstation Environment version. Other countries can purchase Irix 6.5 from the telesales office indicated in the SGI global sites list.

Current patch set: Numerous patches have been released for the 6.3 and 6.4 versions of Irix. In most cases only small parts of the entire patch set are required for Artstream, however it is easiest to avoid confusion by simply installing the entire patch set if possible. Since these patch sets are 200+ MB, they should be obtained on CD, and are available even without support contracts from the SGI TAC line at 1-800-800-4744(4SGI) in the USA, or the Technical Assistance Center of each country indicated in the SGI global sites list. If, for some reason, it is difficult to obtain these patches, contact support@mediascape.com for information on smaller incremental changes that may be needed for your specific system.

A full inventory of installed software can be viewed with the Manage Installed Software option of the SoftwareManager. If installation of any n32 version of a library is necessary, be sure that the sw32 version of the product is selected.

License Installation

Once the software is installed, and you have obtained your license, the license must be installed using the License Manager. Root privileges are necessary to make any license changes. The License Manager is launched from the system ToolChest show below:

System ToolChest with License Manager Selected

After the License Manager is launched, use the Install... option to continue the installation. Depending on your license type, select either a Node Locked or Floating FLEXlm license type. Next, apply the corresponding entries in your license file to the License Manager dialog. When all the required entries have been supplied, complete the installation with the OK button in the dialog. The application is now ready to launch.

Launching the Application

Following installation, the icon for the application is added to Applications deck of the Icon Catalog. This catalog can be viewed by using the Find->Applications option in the ToolChest. The application named artstream will be listed there. The supplied icon for the application will not be visible until a new login occurs, until then a default icon is shown above the name. The application can be launched by either double-clicking on the icon in the catalog, or by dragging the icon to the desktop, and double-clicking on the icon there.
