Motif Conventions

Border Controls

Border controls allow an SGI/Motif window to be moved and resized. Pressing and dragging with the cursor on any edge of the window border allows that edge to slide inward or outward to increase or decrease the size of the window. Pressing and dragging the cursor on any window corner allows the two adjacent edges to be moved inward or outward simultaneously. Note that only windows with corner notches are resizable. Pressing and dragging the cursor over the title bar at the top of the window allows the window to be repositioned at its current size.

Window Manager Icon Controls

The Window Manager controls for the SGI/Motif window include the dash on the left side to close the window, and the small and large box on the right side to minimize and maximize the window respectively. Minimize and maximize capability for a given window is determined by the application design.

Window Manager Pulldown Menu

The pulldown menu for the SGI/Motif window is made visible by right-clicking over any part of a window border, or ALT-right-clicking anywhere inside the window. When popped up, the following, self-explanatory options appear, including their keyboard accelerator alternatives. It should be noted that "Close" is intended to close only the associated window, while "Quit" is intended to terminate the entire application.

You use the file browser in several situations - when you open or save a file, when you insert a file, when you choose a brush style, or import other files. This section provides general instructions for using the browser.

The top portion of the browser is labeled Files. It shows all files and directories that are contained in the directory whose full pathname is shown in the middle of the window.

You can also drag an icon from the desktop and drop it in the drop pocket; the File Browser correctly interprets the pathname for the file and inserts it in the text field.
